How NFL Playoff Bracket Pools Work
The NFL Playoff Format
The NFL Playoffs feature 14 teams — 7 from the AFC and 7 from the NFC. The top seed in each conference gets a first-round bye, while the remaining six teams play on Wild Card Weekend. From there, the bracket narrows through the Divisional Round, Conference Championships, and finally the Super Bowl. Unlike March Madness, the NFL reseeds after every round: the highest remaining seed always plays the lowest remaining seed. This means the bracket matchups shift after each round, making bracket pools uniquely challenging.
What Is an NFL Playoff Bracket Pool?
In a bracket pool, each participant predicts which teams will advance through every round of the playoffs. Before Wild Card Weekend, everyone fills out their bracket — picking winners for each game all the way through the Super Bowl. After each round, participants earn points for every correct pick. The commissioner sets custom point values per round, so the Super Bowl can be worth more than early rounds (or not — it's your call). At the end of the playoffs, whoever has the most points wins.
Why Reseeding Makes It Interesting
Because the NFL reseeds after each round, the actual matchups are unpredictable. If a lower seed pulls off an upset in the Wild Card round, the entire bracket shifts. You're not just picking winners — you're predicting which teams will survive a bracket that constantly reshuffles. This adds a layer of strategy that doesn't exist in fixed-bracket tournaments like March Madness.
