How MLB Playoff Bracket Pools Work
The MLB Postseason Format
Twelve teams reach the postseason, six from each league. The top two seeds in each league get a bye straight to the Division Series, while the 3 seed hosts the 6 and the 4 hosts the 5 in a best-of-three Wild Card Series. From there it is a best-of-five Division Series, a best-of-seven League Championship Series, and the World Series.
What Is an MLB Playoff Bracket Pool?
Everyone picks the winner of every series before the postseason begins and earns points for each correct pick. The commissioner sets the point value of each round, so a World Series call can be worth far more than a Wild Card upset.
Why Byes Change the Strategy
Because the top two seeds skip the Wild Card round, they enter the Division Series rested but cold, and short series are the most volatile in sports. Picking chalk through the first two rounds is rarely the winning strategy, which is exactly what makes a pool fun.
Setting Up Before the Field Is Set
You can create the pool and invite everyone before the regular season ends. The bracket fills in with the real seeds once the field is official, and picks stay open until first pitch of the Wild Card round.
Predict Series Length for Bonus Points
Every postseason round is a series, so pools can award a bonus for calling the exact number of games. You earn it when your series winner is right and your game count matches, which rewards reading the pitching matchups rather than just picking favorites.
